DO YOU HAVE QUESTIONS BEFORE STARTING STRENGTH TRAINING ?
On this page, you'll find answers to the questions women most often ask before starting strength training or joining a gym. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, just reach out, we’re always happy to help you get started with confidence.
Do I need to be fit to start strength training?
Absolutely not. Strength training is for everyone, no matter your current fitness level or experience. You don’t need to be “fit” to begin. At Belift, we personalise every workout to your ability, helping you build strength and confidence safely and gradually. Everyone starts somewhere and, you’re ready to start exactly as you are today.
Will strength training make me bulky?
Women naturally have lower levels of testosterone than men, which makes it much harder to gain large amounts of muscle. Instead, lifting weights builds lean muscle, improves tone, strengthens bones, boosts metabolism, and supports overall health.

At Belift, we focus on gradual, progressive training that helps you feel stronger and more confident, while sculpting your body in a natural, healthy way. Many women notice improved posture, firmer arms, and stronger legs without ever feeling “too muscular.”
How often should beginners strength train?
For most beginners, two to three sessions per week is a good starting point.

This allows enough time to:
-
learn the movements
-
build strength gradually
-
recover between sessions

Consistency is more important than doing large amounts of training.
What if I’ve never been to a gym before?
That’s very common.

Many people feel nervous walking into a gym for the first time because they’re not sure what to do or how the equipment works. In a personal training environment, you don’t have to figure things out alone.

A coach guides you through the exercises, explains how everything works, and adjusts the workout to your ability. Over time you learn the movements and the space becomes familiar.
Most people go from feeling unsure in the first session to feeling comfortable within a few weeks.
What should I wear in the gym?
Wear something that feels comfortable and easy to move in. You don’t need any special gym outfit.

Most people train in:
-
leggings or comfortable shorts
-
a t-shirt or sports top
-
trainers with a flat sole (like running or gym trainers)

You might also want to bring:
-
a water bottle
-
a light layer (studios can feel cool when you arrive and warmer once you start moving)

And don’t worry about looking “gym ready”. The goal of your first session is simply to feel comfortable, learn the movements, and enjoy the experience.
Is personal training worth it?
For most people yes, especially when you’re starting out and want guidance, structure, and support.

Many of our members say that once they walk through the door, all they need to focus on is doing their best, because everything else has already been planned for them.

Personal training removes the guesswork from exercise. Instead of trying to figure out what to do on your own, you follow a clear plan and have someone there to guide you through each step.
It’s a bit like learning to drive a car, most of us wouldn’t get behind the wheel without a few lessons first.
Working with a trainer can provide:
-
Structure and workouts tailored to you, so you know exactly what to do
-
Guidance on proper technique, helping you move safely and effectively
-
Accountability and consistency, which makes it easier to build a routine
-
A lower risk of injury, because exercises are adjusted to your ability
-
Faster progress, compared with trying to piece workouts together on your own
How long does it take to see results?
Many people start noticing changes within 4–6 weeks.
Early improvements often include:
-
feeling stronger
-
better energy levels
-
improved posture
-
more confidence in movements
-

Physical changes usually follow once consistent training habits are established.
Can strength training help with weight loss?
Yes, strength training can support weight loss.

When you strength train, your body builds and maintains muscle. Muscle tissue requires more energy than fat, which means your body can burn more calories throughout the day, even when you’re not exercising.

Strength training also helps you preserve muscle while losing fat, which is important for maintaining strength, energy, and a healthy metabolism.

Many people also find that strength training:
-
improves body composition (losing fat while maintaining muscle)
-
increases energy levels
-
supports long-term weight management
-
makes everyday activities feel easier
-

At Belift, the focus is on helping you become stronger and more capable first. When people train consistently, move more, and build muscle, changes in body composition often follow naturally over time.
Are some gyms better for beginners?
Yes, some gyms are definitely better suited for beginners.

When you’re starting out, it helps to be in an environment where you don’t have to figure everything out on your own. Many large gyms give you a quick introduction and then leave you to train independently, which can feel overwhelming if you’re not sure what to do.

Beginner-friendly gyms usually provide more guidance, structure, and support, so you feel confident from the start.

At Belift, sessions are coach-led and designed to be welcoming for people with little or no gym experience. You’re guided through the entire workout, the exercises are adapted to your level, and you’re never expected to know what to do before you arrive.
